Our Story

Vonnegut Thoreau Construction, named for  writers Kurt Vonnegut and Henry David Thoreau,  brings a productive blend of character, creativity, and craftsmanship to the profession of remodeling and building.

Each of the two general partners, Kevin McCreight and Matt Joyce, is a licensed general contractor with superb command of construction methods and materials. This team has more than 30 years of construction experience and the partners are involved directly on all facets of every project.

Because each client deserves our best, we build projects with a full-service approach.  One of the partners is a dedicated project manager for every job. We pride ourselves on our accessibility and accountability to our clients, our architects and our build-team.

We know how to bring together the parts that create an exceptional finished product at a good price: skilled trades, professional design and each client’s unique needs. We  have strong relationships with the area’s finest architects, designers, subcontractors, vendors and suppliers. We combine the accessibility and service of a small company with the resources to handle every job.  Our efficient, artisan-style approach allows us to build more of your project and reach more of your goals at a reasonable cost.

VTC proudly serves customers in the San Francisco Bay Area with our commitment to quality, utmost attention to detail and dedication to customer satisfaction. From additions, re-builds, high-end interiors to complete home and commercial space renovations, Vonnegut Thoreau is devoted to employing best practices, methods and materials. With a core team of subcontractors and vendors who are vested in our team concept of building we always strive to exceed expectations.

We offer our services in estimating, managing and building your residential or commercial remodel project.

Our passion is for the entire process – from pre-construction to the final touches of the build – with an emphasis on a sincerely personal level of customer service.

Our Team

Matt Joyce graduated from UC Davis in 1994, holding an American Literature degree and searching for a vocation. He proceeded to land a job as a journalist and earn a Master’s Degree in Literature, but five years later he heard the calling of the trades and apprenticed with a traditional master craftsman. Matt manages the company’s cabinet shop and residential projects; he also shares in development and estimating work. He enjoys running, hiking with his Border Terrier and time with his family and friends.

A native of the Bay Area, Kevin has spent most of his life in the best place on earth. Kevin’s been building since the tender age of sixteen, working summers as an apprentice’s apprentice. He’s been building full-time since moving to San Francisco in 2005. While at UCSC Kevin studied psychology, a discipline which he has yet to apply on the jobsite. Like his partners, Kevin has multiple roles at VTC. He’s a lead builder, estimator, project manager, CTO, and role model to his partners. He brings his eye for detail and his know-how to every job. Kevin is the tallest partner at VTC. Kevin is clever and excels at problem-solving, in particular opening stubborn jars. In his free time, he can be found surfing (usually with Matt), riding his beloved old motorcycle, or suffering embarrassing defeats with his softball team, the Old Fashioneds.

Our Philosophy

Vonnegut Thoreau was founded in 2007 on two simple principles – stay dedicated to the perfection of the trades and be distinguished by superior customer service.

“Give me a hammer and let me feel for the furring. Do not depend on the putty. Drive a nail home and clinch it so faithfully that you can wake up in the night and think of your work with satisfaction – every nail driven should be another rivet in the machine of the Universe, you carrying on the work.”

-Henry David Thoreau, Walden
